Halo around the sun

Halo around the sun

Crystals playing in the air caused a ring around the sun on Wednesday.

Many were surprised with what they thought was a mini eclipse.

This was sparked by a halo around the sun which Wits Planetarium Astronomer Claire Flanegan explained was just caused by the weather.

"What we are seeing are ice crystals and they have a rainbow effect causing a coloured ring around the sun", says Flanegan.

Flanegan said that although we did have an eclipse on Sunday, this was completely different.

The effect is known as a Sundog - it may appear as a colored patch of light to the left or right of the sun, 22° distant and at the same distance above the horizon as the sun, and in ice halos.

They can be seen anywhere in the world during any season, but they are not always obvious or bright. Sundogs are best seen and are most conspicuous when the sun is low.
