Hammanskraal water crisis could lead to heart disease - experts
Updated | By Eva Chipa
An independent panel of
experts who investigated the water crisis in Hammanskraal, north of Pretoria
warned serious diseases could develop in residents such as heart disease,
Parkinson's disease, cancer and the so-called blue baby syndrome.

The chairman of the investigation panel, Advocate Jonas Letsoalo, said despite a previous court order on the quality of drinking water, the Tshwane Metro has failed to carry out their constitutional and municipal mandate.
Tshwane MMC for Utility Services Phillip Nel said while the city cannot comment on the content as of yet, it will study the report.
“We cannot at this early-stage comment about the content thereof, we will study and we will provide a comprehensive response to the report.”
Nel also said the problem is an old one.
“Personally, I don’t expect to find much new information in here (the report) because the Hammanskraal water treatment plant and the Rooiwal waste water treatment plant have been subjected to many public investigations and hearings, most notably that by the human rights commission. The problem is an old one dating back to 2004.”
