This confirmation follows after a series of laboratory tests.

The city's mayor, Nasiphi Moya, drank the water during a visit to the area on Wednesday and assured that it meets health standards.

She said they will continue working on upgrades to ensure a reliable, clean water supply.

More phases are set for completion by mid-2025.

“We have four modules we need to roll out to cover all residents. So, today, we can confirm that phase one is done. The residents can drink the water. We have drunk the water ourselves,” she said.

“We are supposed to complete the second module by the end of February, the third module at the end of April and the fourth module at the end of June.”

In 2019, the Human Rights Commission found that the water in Hammanskraal was unsuitable for human consumption.

The commission’s findings came after more than 30 people died during a cholera outbreak.

The outbreak prompted a visit by President Cyril Ramaphosa and a promise of interim measures to address the decades-long problem of the lack of potable water in the area.
