World Teachers' Day represents a significant effort to raise awareness, understanding and appreciation for the vital contribution that teachers make to education and development across the globe.

President Jacob Zuma sent his good wishes to all teachers in South Africa.

"Teachers are an important backbone of our education system and are therefore the architects of the economic prosperity that we so desire. On this special World Teachers Day, and on behalf of government, we wish all our teachers a happy productive World Teachers Day. May they continue to educate and grow our nation," President Zuma said.

Teachers union Sadtu said teachers should be honoured today.

"Despite all the signs of not taking care of their salaries, not taking care of their environment where they work, the violence that is directed at teachers, we call on our teachers to remain focussed, love our country and teaching our children" Sadtu's Mugwena Maluleke said.
