Hawks arrest one of their own
Updated | By JacarandaFM News
A member of the Hawks in Mpumalanga has been arrested in connection with the alleged theft of more than R400 000.
Captain Richard Nkwanyana (48) handed himself over to the Hawks' Middelburg Organised Unit on Monday.
The stolen cash was money originally seized from two suspects in May last year.
"It transpired that the money had allegedly vanished and Captain Nkwanyama, who took responsibility to safeguard the cash, gave different statements. An order was granted against the Mpumalanga Provincial Commissioner in July this year to reimburse the two gentlemen but to no avail," says Hawks spokesman Hangweni Mulaudzi.
An investigation by the Hawks in Mpumalanga revealed that a further R43 000 from a separate case also went missing.
Nkwanyana has since been suspended.
He appeared briefly at the Nelspruit Magistrate Court and was released on R5000 bail.
He faces charges of theft and defeating the ends of justice and is expected in court again on 17 October.
