Hawks confirm probe into Nkabane

The Hawks have confirmed that they are investigating a case opened against Higher Education and Training Minister Nobuhle Nkabane.

However, the unit has not specified the nature of the criminal complaint.

"The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation can confirm that a case has been opened for investigation which is at an early stage. Further details cannot be interrogated in the media space." said Hawks spokesperson Katlego Mogale

The Hawks’ confirmation comes after the DA laid charges against Nkabane for misleading parliament last week.

"We welcome that the criminal complaint against Nkabane is being seen in a most serious light by the HAWKS. While President Ramaphosa continues to take zero action against ANC corruption, the DA continues to make progress in our fight against it." said DA spokesperson Karabo Khakhau

Nkabane is under pressure to resign amid allegations that she lied to Parliament over an advisory panel responsible for appointing the board chairs of the Sector Education and Training Authorities.

Last month, President Cyril Ramaphosa requested a report from Nkabane on her conduct during a recent appearance in Parliament.

This came after the minister refused to disclose the names of advisors who assisted her during the appointment process.

Those initially appointed included two senior ANC members and the son of cabinet minister Gwede Mantashe.

Last week, the National Assembly rejected Nkabane's department budget vote, with several political parties calling for her to step down.
