Hawks nab five suspected illegal mining kingpins in NW
Updated | By Jacaranda FM News
Five suspected illegal mining kingpins are expected to appear in Mogwase Magistrate’s Court in North West on Thursday.
The suspects were arrested by Hawks and other law enforcement agencies in Rustenburg on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Two vehicles believed to have been obtained through the proceeds of crime were seized for further investigation.
Spokesperson for the Hawks in North West Tlangelani Rikhotso says the operation is a culmination of ongoing investigations into illegal mining in the Rustenburg area.
"That operation which took place at a Rustenburg mine led to the seizure of illegally mined chrome worth over R2 million and equipment (vehicles and excavators) worth approximately R100 million,” says Rikhotso.
