Hawks nab Joburg cop for extortion after high-speed chase

The Hawks have arrested a police sergeant for allegedly attempting to extort money from a suspect linked to a case of tax fraud.
The police officer, who was arrested following a high-speed chase, is set to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.
Hawks spokesperson Philani Nkwalase says the officer was arrested by the unit’s Serious Corruption Investigation team on Tuesday.
“The Hawks promptly acted on information about a commissioned officer stationed at Florida allegedly demanding money in exchange for not arresting a person who reportedly committed tax-related fraud”
“A waylay investigation was executed in Fordsburg where the suspect collected the money and fled the scene. The suspect was chased and arrested along Albertina Sisulu Street in Fordsburg.”
