Updated | By Sibahle Motha
The Department of Health has urged South Africans to continue getting vaccinated against Covid-19, while surveillance of a new variant is ongoing.
This follows reports from China, that the XXB variant of Covid-19 has also been discovered in that country and that it could infect 65 million people a week in its peak.
Health Department spokesperson Foster Mohale says that new variant has already been identified in South Africa.

"The scientists in our extensive laboratory network informed us that they are continuing with surveillance and they don't see any rise of other variants nor cases in South Africa. We have had XBB 1.5 as the dominant variant for a long time in the country. However, we continue to urge people to come forward and vaccinate and get booster shots''.
