High Court grants NPA's request to postpone Gupta assets case

The Free State High Court has
postponed an application by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) to freeze
assets belonging to the Gupta family and their associates.
The case, involving assets that are worth about R180 million, was heard on Thursday afternoon in Bloemfontein.
Judge Phillip Jacobus said he believed the NPA could have done more to prepare for the matter despite the challenges they faced.
Jacobus, however, agreed with the National Director of Public Prosecutions’ legal representative Advocate Gerna Wright’s assertion that the matter is of public interest and is indeed complex in nature.
He said it is in the interest of justice that all parties should be able to make their arguments "courts are obliged to ensure that hearings are fair".
The matter is postponed to May 17.
This is the return date that was initially set when the preservation order was first granted on April 11.
NPA spokesperson, Luvuyo Mvaku, said they are pleased with the judgement.
