Executive director of Naptosa Basil Manuel says the high infection rate has a negative impact on pupils’ ability to learn.

“These high infection rates are having a negative impact on both learners, parents and teachers. We remain concerned about the high infections rates that we are witnessing particularly in our coastal provinces, but also in other parts of the country like the Free State.“

As of Sunday, there were 154 071 active Covid-19 infections across the country with coastal provinces such as KwaZulu-Natal accounting for 42 267 of the cases and the Western Cape recording 35 644.

Manuel says they call on call schools to stick to the one meter social distancing rule.

“We believe this is due to a large number of learners per class, the overcrowding and the fact that not everybody is observing the correct social distance. It is confirmed that social dance must be at least a meter, and we asking that schools stick to that.”
