Hilton Moreeng: Not lifting Women’s T20 World Cup trophy still hurts

Momentum Proteas coach Hilton Moreeng has admitted that not being able to lift the Women’s T20 World Cup trophy this past weekend still hurts.

Moreeng was speaking at a press conference at OR Tambo International Airport on Wednesday.

Australia won the Women's T20 World Cup for the sixth time in the last seven tournaments when they beat South Africa by 19 runs in the final at Newlands in Cape Town on Sunday.

“How the team responded after the first game (losing to Sri Lanka) showed the character of the team and the determination to make sure we get ourselves to an impossible final and to get ourselves so close,” Moreeng said.

“For us not lifting the trophy is still hurting, but we understand that we can’t win them all. I think everyone in the entire squad gave it their all. I think we have no regrets about what transpired in the World Cup but we can only be proud and that the legacy continues.”

Proteas captain Sune Luus said she hopes that the team’s performance will inspire girls and boys across the country.

"Obviously for us the thought of inspiring a nation didn’t start three days ago. I think as a young girl you start playing cricket and playing International cricket, and when you step onto the field you start inspiring a nation. I think the media just gave us the platform to express that even more and reach parts of the country that we couldn’t reach before.

“So it was a massive honour for us to be a part of this World Cup in terms of the success we’ve had and obviously to inspire young girls and boys in our country. It is an honour and privilege.”
