Historical debt sees some 120 000 qualified students without degrees

Nearly 120 000 student haven’t received their degrees from various universities and TVET colleges across the country due to outstanding fees.
These students qualified between 2010 and 2020.
Higher Education minister Blade Nzimande revealed the alarming statistics in a reply to a parliamentary question.
Walter Sisulu University in the Eastern Cape has listed more than 20 000 students who have not been conferred their degrees.
The grand total owed to the institution by students is tallied at R526 million.
University of KwaZulu-Natal is the second highest with more than 17 000.
University of Cape Town and Rhodes University each have more than 300 students who have not been given their degrees due to historical debt.
The stats come amid students protests at some institutions calling for free, decolonised education.
