Learning at Hoërskool Stilfontein has been suspended amid a call by pupils for the removal of the principle amid accusations of racism.

The provincial Department of Education’s Freddy Sepeng says officials were on the way to the school on Monday.

Sepeng says details are still sketchy and the department is calling on parents and learners not to disrupt classes.

"As the department, you'll remember that we have instituted a task team whereby we'll be investigating racism in all our schools and that problem with Stilfontein. Those allegations, the task team is busy investigation and we'll be able to give you a feedback later on."

The latest incident comes shortly after a picture, showing black and white Grade R pupils seated separately in a classroom at Laerskool Schweizer-Reneke, went viral on social media.

The Grade R teacher has since been suspended and the South African Human Rights Commission has launched an investigation.

The education department has also launched its own probe into the incident.

The school's governing body has denied claims of racism, saying that the incident does not reflect the values of the Laerskool Schweizer-Reneke.
