Home visits dominate special vote in Soweto

Most stations in Soweto on Saturday were empty as officials were conducting home visits

Special voting officially begun on Saturday morning at 8am and will continue until Sunday. 


Some residents of Diepkloof Soweto were turned away from the library in Zone 1 were turned away and told to come vote on Sunday. 


Presiding officer, Peggy Lunga said they were under the impression that they were only conducting home visits on Saturday to assist people living with disabilities, the elderly and pregnant women who applied to vote at home. 


They were later informed that they have to conducting both home visits and station votes. 


In Orlando East, ward 30 at a voting station that has been set up in a church, you are met with a pungent smell of garbage at the gate. 


Orlando residents have been up in arms protesting against loadshedding and electricity cuts offs. 


However inside the station, the IEC presiding officer told Jacaranda FM News that they managed to conduct all the home visits on their lists. 


The officers were clear that anyone who is not on their list and has not registered despite their condition or need for a special vote will not be allowed to vote as walk-ins are not allowed.
