Homeless have scathing remarks for Zuma
Updated | By Maryke Vermaak
President Jacob Zuma says South Africans need to realise that not all foreign nationals are involved in crime.
President Zuma was speaking at the launch of the newly-renovated Desmond Tutu Refugee Centre in Marabastad.
The president says this new centre will be committed to treating people with dignity and to greatly improve the services on offer.
He says there are very good reasons why this centre was named after one of South Africa's greatest sons.
"We are happy that the centre is being named after a distinguished South African who has fought tirelessly for justice, equality, human rights and freedom," says President Zuma.
Outside the refugee centre, however, homeless South Africans had scathing remarks for the president, saying foreigners are treated with more dignity than they are.
"At the end of the day we are jobless and homeless. We are staying in a shelter for many years. We are right across Home Affairs. We have old people suffering and we don't have medical aid or a clinic," says 'n disgruntled man.
