The N3 in Harrismith has been completely closed after a car and a truck collided.
According to NetCare 911 spokesperson, Athlenda Mathe, both vehicles caught fire while all the occupants were still trapped inside.
"We are not sure how many people were in the vehicles," Mathe told Jacaranda FM News.
Authorities are currently on scene to try and determine what could have caused the accident and exactly how many people were involved.
NetCare 911 also urged motorists to adhere to the rules of the road.
"Stick to the speed limit, never drink and drive and don't overtake when it is not safe," she said.
It is alleged that the car collided head-on with the truck and that the truck dragged the car for a few meters before it burst into flames.
