Howe Instant Noodles ‘doubtful’ EC deaths caused by product
Updated | By Doreen Loubser
The manufacturer of Howe Instant Noodles believes the death of three young children in Gqeberha was not caused by their product.
This after the three minors died last month after eating noodles purchased at a local spaza shop.
While the toxicology report is still outstanding, the manufacturer is of the opinion the symptoms experienced by the children were far too severe to be a normal type of food poisoning, sparking concerns that the noodles were contaminated in another way.
In an official statement released by their attorneys, the manufacturer said they immediately launched an internal investigation into the matter.
The company said the safety of their consumers is their biggest concern and as manufacturers of a branded product they have the responsibility to ensure that it is safe for consumption.
Eastern Cape police spokesperson Priscilla Naidu confirmed that the toxicology report of the deceased children had not been finalised.
Naidu says they will not comment on the matter until they receive the results of the toxicology report.
On Thursday, the National Consumer Commission also launched an investigation into the supplier of Howe noodles who are based in Kariega.
Acting Consumer Commissioner Thezi Mabuza told media that while the Commission is awaiting laboratory results, this investigation will help the Commission understand the nature, causes, extent and degree of the risk to the public.
