Hundreds arrested in Gauteng

More than 390 suspects were arrested in Gauteng over the weekend during several Safer Festive Season Operations by the South African Police Service.

Operations included roadblocks, stop and search, shebeen raiding, and raiding of wanted suspects.

 

Captain Mavela Masondo says 116 suspects were arrested in Ekurhuleni for crimes ranging from possession of dagga, driving under the influence of alcohol and assault.

 

He says several suspects were also arrested in Soweto.

 

"229 suspects were nabbed by the police in Soweto for committing crimes such as hijacking, house robbery, armed robbery, possession of dagga and driving under the influence of alcohol," says Masondo.

 

Suspects were also arrested in Pretoria and Johannesburg for hijacking, assault, attempted house robbery, theft, driving under the influence of alcohol and possession of drugs, amongst other crimes.

 

"All arrested suspects will appear before different Magistrate Courts in Gauteng on Monday," says Masondo.
