Hundreds displaced in Durban flooding

Altogether 386 people have been displaced by heavy rainfall and flooding in Durban over the past 48 hours, according to eThekwini metro municipality spokesperson Thulani Mbatha.

He said on Sunday that emergency services personnel had also recorded structural damage to 85 houses in the area, but that the numbers were increasing “by the half-hour”.


Mbatha said provincial and city emergency services were working together to provide assistance to the displaced and the injured. 


The teams were in a meeting on Sunday evening to determine where to open community halls to members of the public.

“At the moment, community halls in uMlazi and Isipingo are being opened to the community. We urge those affected to seek shelter in these halls,” he said.

Flooding had been reported in both areas, with uMlazi’s T-section being hard hit. Durban has been experiencing torrential rains that have led directly to the deaths of two children. At least three people have also died in road accidents due to the heavy downpours.
