Hundreds nabbed in Joburg anti-crime operation

At least 142 people were arrested in roadblocks in the Sedibeng and Johannesburg districts on Thursday morning.
"Teams of law enforcement agencies under the command of the Gauteng commissioner Elias Mawela, accompanied by the MEC for community safety Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane continue to clean up the streets of Gauteng ," Gauteng police’s Kay Makhubela said.
He said the raid began in the early hours of the morning.
Of the total number, 111 were arrested for charges including rape, assault and murder.
"We identified the hotpot and where the crimes are happening and through the intelligence which are moving around the community daily."
The others faced numerous charges, including possession of drugs and unlicensed firearms.
Counterfeit goods worth almost R30 m were also confiscated.
"And during the confiscating of the counterfeit goods, an am amount of more than R100 000 in cash was seized."
Makhubela said the suspects would appear in court soon.
"We will be continuing with our operations as we are approaching the elections."
