Brown says she has served the ANC for 23 years as a public representative and the time has come to make way for new blood.

Brown says she willing to serve the organization in any capacity needed.

"I remain a member of the organization and serve the organization in any capacity voluntarily as I have done previously.”

Brown is adamant she will continue testifying at the inquiry looking into state capture at Eskom.

There have also been reports that some family members and friends were given lucrative Eskom contracts during her tenure as Minister of Public Enterprises.

"Of course will testify, I called for it ten times. Of course I’ll be testifying in the inquiry," says Brown.

She would not be drawn into speculating if any other of her axed former colleagues would follow her example and resign.

The spokesperson for the ANC Chief Whip's office, Nonceba Mhlauli, says Brown served as an MP since 2014.

"She has expressed her gratitude in having served the people of South Africa and thanked the ANC for having given her the opportunity to do so," says Mhlauli. "We are confident that she will continue serving the country and our movement in other capacities in future. We wish her well."

Brown is the former premier of the Western Cape, she joined the National Assembly in 2014, taking over from Malusi Gigaba as Minister of Public Enterprises.
