IEC to approach Concourt over Tlokwe ruling
Updated | By Maryke Vermaak
The IEC is seeking to overturn a decision taken by the Electoral Court by taking the Tlokwe by-election decision to the highest court in the land.
IEC chairperson Glen Mashinini addressed the media on Monday and said the decision was taken at an extra-ordinary commission meeting on Sunday.
Mashini said the body wanted clarity on what exact information should be on the voters roll.
He said it needed to be clarified as it might lead to many not participating in the voting process.
"Suppose a person is a destitute person - does not have a home, does not have an address. What does the judgement mean? Suppose a person, as some people have already indicated, they feel it is their constitutional right that they should reserve their privacy and yet we are required to give the political parties their addresses," Mashini said.
IEC vice-chairperson Terry Tselane said the action would not prevent the upcoming municipal and by-elections from going ahead.
"We are continuing with our processes as we proceed with this and the fact that we are appealing to the Constitutional Court does not nullify other processes that we have embarked on," Tselane said.
