South Africans will head to the polls on 29 May.

The commission's CEO, Sy Mamabolo, says the commission is also preparing its own backup plans to mitigate the impact of load shedding.

"The commission had interactions with the Ministry of Electricity, and a task team has been established between the commission and Eskom.

"Plans are being worked out to ensure that there are fewer disruptions to the energy system during elections. But even so, we cannot with utmost certainty say there won't be load shedding on election day.

“So we are preparing alternative sources of lighting and energy so that the electoral process is not disrupted by energy issues.”
