IEC welcomes Electoral court judgment on MK party

The Independent Electoral Commission has welcomed the Electoral Court judgement on the registration of the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party.

The Electoral Court this morning dismissed the ANC's application to have the MK Party deregistered and kicked off the ballot.
The newly formed by party, endorsed by former President Jacob Zuma initially had its application rejected due to failure to submit signatures.
However, it subsequently submitted a supplement application which was accepted by the IEC.
The IEC says the judgement provides the necessary clarity and certainty to enable the finalisation of candidate nomination processes.
"Additionally, the ruling confirms that the decision to register this party was taken regularly and in terms of the law.
Finally, the Commission reiterates its commitment and preparedness to deliver free and fair 2024 National and Provincial elections," the commission said in a statement.
On Tuesday morning, Judge Leicester Adams said both the IEC and MK Party followed due processes.
"The DCEO in registering MK complied with the requirements of section 15 of the Electoral Commission act, read with section 61. The regulations in annexture 1, therefore find that there is nothing unlawful about the registration of the MK by the DCEO on September 2023", he said.
