According to IEC spokesperson, Kate Bapela the past weekend was the last voter registration weekend but she added that voters can still check their status and register to vote until further notice.

"We hope that the numbers increased the past weekend - especially for first time voters," Bapela told Jacaranda FM News.

She said that approximately 1.2 million voters passed through their voting stations from last Friday up until Sunday.

"A lot of young people who were registering were first time voters and we hope for an increase in those numbers," she said.

The President last week announced the date of the elections - 3 August 2016 - and until the date appears in the Government Gazette, voters can still register.

Bapela urged voters to visit their nearest IEC office or contact them to register.
