IFP heads to court to remove Zandile Gumede as MPL

The party filed the application in the High Court in Pietermaritzburg on Thursday.

It’s scheduled to be heard in January 2021.

IFP president Velenkosini Hlabisa says numerous calls on the African National Congress to remove Gumede have all fallen on deaf ears.

Gumede was sworn-in as an MPL in August despite her corruption case still being before the courts.

“It is true, the IFP Kwazulu-Natal legislature caucus has taken a further step as our last resort after having tried all avenues to resolve the matter of Zandile Gumede.

“When we have realised all our attempts are on fallen on deaf ears, we have now filed papers in the court of law requesting the judiciary to remove Gumede.”

Gumede has since been asked by the ANC to step aside pending her court matter, something which Hlabisa says has resulted in her earning a salary for doing nothing..

“Since she was sworn in, she has never done anything for the legislature, not attending legislature sittings, the portfolio committees or oversight work but yet she is earning a full salary with benefits every month. It is something we find unacceptable.”
