‘I’ll sleep at Union Buildings until the president meets me’
Updated | By Sibahle Motha
#FeesMustFall activist Bonginkosi Khanyile has vowed to make the Union Buildings his home until President Cyril Ramaphosa receives his petition.
Khanyile arrived at the Union Buildings on Tuesday as part of his campaign for presidential pardon to be granted to all student activists arrested during the protests for free higher education.
He will be staging a sleep out.
The Durban Regional Court last week convicted Khanyile on charges of public violence‚ failing to comply with a police instruction and possession of a dangerous weapon.
He is now awaiting sentencing.
"In case the president does not meet today, I am carrying a blanket because I am prepared to sleep until the President comes and meets me," Khanyile told a group of supporters.
There have been growing calls from society and social media calling for the President to pardon #FeesMustFall students.
Another student activist, Mcebo Dlamini, walked from Braamfontein to the Union Buildings to hand over a letter to Ramaphosa, requesting amnesty for all student activists who may be facing charges related to the 2016 protests.
He is also still facing charges linked to the protests.
