Various law enforcement agencies, including police, Ekurhuleni metro police, Gauteng Crime Prevention Wardens and officials from the passenger rail agency swooped on illegal mining operations in the Makause informal settlement on Tuesday.

Officials have been raiding illegal mining operations since five suspected illegal miners died in Riverlea, south of Johannesburg, last weekend.
Ekurhuleni metro police spokesperson Kelebogile Thepa confirmed that the department managed to confiscate equipment used for illegal mining.
"Various mining equipment was confiscated ranging from gas cylinders, Phendukas and steel bowls used for various illicit activities. It is further noted that the dwelling within the Makause informal settlement harbour illegal miners and permits their operation to be conducted in their full view. The zama zamas were anticipating our arrival.”
