Implats & NUM sign two year wage deal

Impala Platinum Limited refinery operation in Springs, east of Johannesburg has signed a two-year wage settlement with the National Union of Mineworkers, the company said on Monday.

“The signed wage agreement provides a reasonable compromise between employee expectations, current wage inflation and the economic realities that dictate the financial sustainability of our business,” said spokesman Johan Theron.
” We thank and congratulate those involved for the maturity and professionalism with which this settlement was secured, under extremely challenging economic circumstances. We look forward to labour stability and the opportunity to work together with our partners in advancing our refining operations for the benefit of all our stakeholders.”
The refinery employs approximately 1,000 people, of which approximately 500 employees were members of the NUM, the majority representative union.
The agreement was effective for the period from the start of July 2016 until the end of June 2018.

In terms of this settlement the basic wage component of employees will increase between 7.5 percent to 10 percent, per year with entry-level employees benefiting from higher percentage increases.
In addition, other benefits, such as medical and housing allowances will increase by seven percent and between four and seven per annum respectively, over the two year period.
“The NUM wishes to expressed its sincere gratitude to its members at Impala Platinum Limited (Refineries) for the manner in which they behaved during the negotiation period until they gave us the mandate to sign this agreement. Our members are excited and they gave us the mandate to sign this agreement,” spokesman Livhuwani Mammburu said in a statement.
In term of the agreement medical aid subsidy increases from R490 to R524 for the main member in the first year and increases to R561 in the second year.

Accommodation allowance increases from R 2,365 to R2,460 for category B-lower/upper employees in the first year and increased to R2,642 in the second year.
Category B5/B7 employees would received an increased accommodation allowance of R2,985 in the first year and R3,194 in the second year.
Accommodation allowance for category C-lower employees would be R5,343 in the first year and rise to R5,557 in the second year.
He said the parties agreed that the 4-shift cycle shift allowance would increase from the current 13 percent to 13.5 percent.
“NUM members at Impala Platinum Limited (Refineries) are quite pleased and excited that the wage agreement was concluded without any strike, violence, intimidation and loss of life,” he said.
