Implats tragedy a blow to mining sector safety - Minerals Council
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
The Minerals Council of South Africa says the deaths of 11 miners at Impala Platinum in Rustenburg is a setback for efforts to reduce fatalities in the sector.
The council has urged the country's mining giants to re-examine and boost their safely programmes and initiatives.
This comes after eleven miners were killed at Impala Platinum’s Rustenburg operations on Monday.
Over 70 other miners have been injured after an elevator bringing the workers back up to the surface malfunctioned.
Impala Platinum has since suspended operations at its mines throughout the country.
"The mining industry had recorded 41 fatalities in the year to date compared to 44 the same period a year earlier.
"This is a terrible blow to our ambition of ending 2023 with fewer fatalities than last year when there were 49 fatalities, the lowest on record, and the continuation of our journey towards zero harm," said Minerals Council spokesperson Allan Seccombe.
