Improvement in electricity supply not ploy to win elections - Presidency
Updated | By Anastasi Mokgobu
The Presidency has refuted claims that improvements in the energy supply are politically motivated ahead of the elections.
It attributes the progress to strategic interventions outlined in the energy action plan, including increased maintenance, new capacity procurement, and support for rooftop solar initiatives.
South Africa has gone 33 consecutive days without the dreaded planned power cuts.
Eskom has attributed this to improved generation capacity, adequate emergency reserves, and reduced electricity demand from the grid.
However, critics say the power cuts will return as soon as the votes are counted after 29 May.
Presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya told a media briefing on Monday that while energy supply remains constrained, efforts are ongoing to stabilise and enhance energy infrastructure for long-term sustainability.
“The implementation of Eskom’s generation recovery plan, including increased maintenance and recovery interventions at the six of the worst performing power stations together with the return of three units at Kusile, have contributed to reduced breakdowns and improved plant performance.”
