Modi addressed some 13 000 people from the oldest Indian diaspora outside of the south Asian country at the Ticketpro Dome.

Modi arrived in the country on Thursday after he kicked off his four nation tour of Africa in Mozambique.

The prime minister said Indians in SA today must contribute to the economy, just like their forefathers fought for political freedom in the country.

"Your desire to connect with the land of your forefathers may be an emotional surge, but you need not limit yourself to that alone. India is a land of opportunity for those that want to connect and collaborate, innovate and create, trade, invest, and produce. Today, India is one of the brightest ports in the global economy," he said.

Modi also recognized contributions made by former president Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Ghandi towards the success story of South Africa.

"The forgiveness of Nelson Mandela and his long march to freedom gave rise to a rainbow nation. Mahatma Ghandi held South Africa dear to his heart. He said it was a sacred and dear land," Modi said.

Modi says India and South Africa are similar in many respects, and have the advantage of young populations.

During his stay, President Zuma and Modi will conclude some of the work around bilateral agreements and memoranda of understanding currently under consideration between the two countries.

Modi's next stops will be Tanzania and Kenya over his five-day trip.
