Inquiry into Phiyega's fitness to hold office kicks off
Updated | By Maryke Vermaak
The inquiry into suspended Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega's fitness to hold office starts in Centurion on Tuesday.
This comes after she was suspended by President Jacob Zuma last year after the Farlam Commission of Inquiry recommended her actions at Marikana be looked into.
In August 2012, 34 striking workers were killed at Lonmin's Marikana mine outside Rustenburg.
Another 10 people were killed in the weeks leading up to the day when police and workers clashed at the koppie.
The Farlam Commission of Inquiry considered the actions of all involved and released a damning regarding the conduct of the police, top officials and Phiyega in particular.
The Claasen Board of Inquiry is expected to conclude its work in five weeks.
It will look into the decision to use maximum force, alleged efforts to cover up what happened at scene, and the truthfulness of Phiyega's testimony before the Farlam commission.
