Inside Kigali Genocide Memorial
Updated | By Slindelo Masikane
This month marks 23 years since one of the worst atrocities the world has seen - the Rwandan genocide.
In 2017, the Kigali Genocide Memorial stands as a stark reminder of what led to the brutal killing of so many Rwandans in 1994.
According to the Kigali Genocide Memorial more than 1 million people lost their lives.
The remains of the people at the memorial were brought here from all over the capital, after they had been left in the streets or thrown into rivers. It serves as a final resting place for over 250 000 victims of the genocide.
The contrast between the two major events on the continent in 1994 has always been a stark one. As South Africa ushered in its first democratic government, to loud applause from around the world, the people of Rwanda experienced violence on a scale never seen before.
