Integrity commission decision on Magashule will only create divisions in ANC, claims MKMVA

Umkhonto We Sizwe Military Veterans Association (MKMVA) has accused the African National Congress (ANC) integrity commission of jumping the gun with its recommendation around secretary-general Ace Magashule.

The commission has recommended that Magashule step down as secretary-general until the completion of his corruption case.

Magashule is facing multiple charges of fraud, corruption and money-laundering linked to an asbestos audit tender that was awarded during his time as Free State premier.

But the ANC on Tuesday said Magashule would remain in his position as the NEC has yet to receive and consider the report.

MKMVA president Kebby Maphatsoe says the commission has questions to answer about the leaking of the report to the media.

“We are not happy with the recommendation by the integrity commission.

“There is a decision of the NEC that the national officials must develop the guidelines, so are waiting for those guidelines. Those guidelines were supposed to inform a decision of the integrity commission.

“But now, before the officials have developed those guidelines and presented them to integrity commission, they have already taken a decision.”

Maphatsoe says the recommendation that Magashule step aside will sow divisions in the party.

“This is the danger to the African National Congress, the unity of the African National Congress, because this thing being finalised by the officials with the decision to be taken. It is going to be an eye for an eye, which is not good for the unity of the African National Congress.”
