Amid a number of challenges facing the Department of Health in Gauteng, Minister of Health Aaron Motsoaledi has announced an intervention team.

The Minister of Health, Aaron Motsoaledi, has announced a four member intervention team to address the myriad of challenges facing the Department of Health in Gauteng.
Motsoaledi addressed reporters on Sunday on the shortcomings of the provincial department.
"These management inadequacies and incapacities have clearly been exposed by the Life Esidimeni tragedy," said Motsoaledi.
Motsoaledi said the team will address issues relating to human resources, procurement systems, financial management, and equipment maintenance.
The Premier of Gauteng David Makhura also spoke during the briefing, saying the department started to deteriorate in late 2016, describing it as "recovery that was drastically undermined".
Makhura said he has been working with former provincial health MEC Qedani Mahlangu's successor, Gwen Ramakgopa, to try and determine the nature of the problems.
"We are also carrying out forensic investigations because we want to be certain that part of this deterioration is not a result of corruption," explained Makhura. "Where there's corruption there are going to be consequences."
The Life Esidimeni tragedy, which claimed the lives of 143 mentally ill patients, occurred under Mahlangu's watch.
She resigned the night before the Health Ombudsman released his report on the matter.
The department's equipment has also been attached by the Sheriff of the Court on more than one occasion due to the department failing to settle outstanding bills.
