Investigation into pregnant learners in NC
Updated | By Jacaranda FM News
The Northern Cape education department has launched an investigation after several pupils fell pregnant at a Kuruman school.
Provincial education department spokesperson Geoffrey van der Merwe says there are also allegations that teachers at the school could be involved.
"The department is aware of the allegations at the Bothitung High School and has commenced with a full-scale investigation."
He says no stone will be left unturned during the investigation.
"We can assure the public that no stone will be left unturned during our investigations and all due disciplinary processes will be followed pending the outcome."
Van der Merwe has told Jacaranda FM News that according to the department's records, 16 pupils have fallen pregnant at the school over the past three years.
This is in contrast to reports which suggest that this number is 30.
"We certainly hope that these learners who have made these allegations provide us with the necessary cooperation to finalise the investigation as swiftly as possible," van der Merwe adds.
