Ipid confirms Bushiri opened extortion case against police
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) has confirmed that fugitive prophet Sheperd Bushiri opened a case against the police in 2018.
Ipid spokesperson Ndileka Cola says Bushiri claims police officers who were investigating allegations of rape against him attempted to extort money in order to make the case disappear.
“Mr Bushiri, through his lawyer, reported the alleged police corruption to Ipid as part of the investigation process.
"Ipid required Bushiri to provide crucial information about the allegations and to acquire witness statements but Mr Bushiri’s non-availability due to his busy schedule has been giving Ipid investigators a challenge to proceed with this case.”

Bushiri, who is also facing charges of fraud and money laundering, skipped the country last week in contravention of his bail conditions.
He is back in his native Malawi, saying he fears for his life and that he won’t receive a fair trial in South Africa.
Government confirmed on Sunday that it has begun the extradition process to get Bushiri and his wife back back to the country.
