Aphiwe Zweni, 21, was assaulted on Wednesday in Alexandra, allegedly by a group of policemen who had arrested her husband, spokesman Moses Dlamini said.

She died on Friday.

"Apparently they [police] wanted the deceased to point out her place of residence as well as her husband's friends."

He said Zweni had difficulty walking after the assault. She was taken to Alexandra Clinic, where she died.

The Ipid was notified of her death and an investigator assigned to the case.

"An identity parade will be held as soon as possible. No arrest has been made. The investigation continues," he said.

A post mortem was scheduled to be conducted on Monday.
