IRR: ANC, EFF ‘trading voter support’

The South African Institute of Race Relations (IRR) latest election poll reveals that the African National Congress (ANC) and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) are battling it out for support among black voters.

IRR’s Head of Politics and Governance, Gareth van Onselen, said there is still a lot of fluidity among voters, especially between potential ANC and EFF voters.

“The two traded support, one way or the other among 5 - 8% of black voters since September.”

The poll also reveals support for the Democratic Alliance (DA) has grown marginally among black voters.

Van Onselen said DA has been stable among black voters at 8%.

“Which is some small growth from 2014 and 2016, it has the potential of going to 9%.”

Van Onselen was speaking at the IRR offices in Melville, Johannesburg, on Monday.

The IRR released it 5th and final poll ahead of the national and provincial elections expected to take place on Wednesday.

Its May election poll was in the field from April 27 to May 4.

Van Onselen says the poll is structured as a  tracking poll using a five day moving average.

The poll shows the ANC might get 53% voter support on a 70% voter turnout, the DA 24% and the EFF 14%.
