Irregular expenditure of national and provincial governments increase
Updated | By Slindelo Masikane
Irregular expenditure has increased by nearly 80 percent since last year.

This according to Auditor General Kimi Makwetu who reported a slight improvement in the audit results of national and provincial governments since the 2013/14 financial year.
The provinces that received the highest number of clean audits were Western Cape, Gauteng and KwaZulu Natal.
Makwetu says while the slight improvement in audit outcomes testifies to better leadership, the increase by almost 40 percent in irregular expenditure since the 2013/14 financial year to R46.36 billion is concerning.
"If we look at the main reason for the increase in irregular expenditure, it continues to be non-compliance with supply chain rules. So, if a department does not comply with supply chain legislations, even if they have made a great effort to source goods and services, they still remain non-compliant and that non-compliance triggers irregular expenditure," says Makwetu.
