Transport authorities have expressed shock following a horrific accident on the N1 in Limpopo.
Twenty-eight people were killed and four others seriously injured.
The driver of a truck lost control and hit several vehicles, including a mini-bus taxi, that was travelling in the opposite direction when his front tyre burst.
The multiple vehicle crash took place on the N1 near Kranskop on Friday afternoon.
“What happened today is nothing short of a disaster,” says Transport and Community Safety MEC, Makoma Makhurupetje.

It is the third deadly crash in the past few months, with Makhurupetje now asking national government to intervene.
“We think it is now time for SANRAL and the national government to declare a disaster on this road - as we cannot continue to lose lives in this manner,” says Makhurupetje.
Police say a case of culpable homicide has been opened.
“The cause of this accident is still not clear at this stage, but the ongoing investigations will tell. The process of identifying the deceased, is still underway,” says spokesperson, Moatshe Ngoepe.
