Gauteng residents woke up to snowflakes falling from the sky on Monday morning, heading into the coldest day so far this year.

Temperatures dropped to at least -6 degrees Celsius in the southern parts of the province.

SAWS Forecaster Tokelo Chiloane says snow fall was not anticipated over the Gauteng province.

"Our models didn't pick up that the push was going to be too strong, that the cold will be so low that any form of moisture in the air can be freezing.

"So, whatever some sort of precipitation that could come over night had be observed as it did come with precipitation as if it was summer. It was going to come with some light rain or drizzle, but because of the low temperatures it has happened that what we are seeing is very light snow."

Chiloane added that temperatures are expected to start getting warmer from Tuesday.

"At the moment we’ve gotten reports that snow is mostly in the Heidelburg areas, where on a normal daily basis they experience low temperatures, and it does make climatic sense that they are getting snow including the Krugersdorp area.

"Tomorrow (Tuesday) we are expecting temperatures to start warming up. There is a possibility that this is the last of the snow that can be seen this morning, as the day progresses temperatures are warming up."
