‘It’s a tough call’ who the new Joburg mayor will be: DA

DA provincial leader in Gauteng, John Moodey says “it’s a tough call” to say who the new mayor of Johannesburg will be.

DA council, Msimanga

However, Moodey is adamant that a new mayor will be elected in the city of on Wednesday.

This in the wake of the postponement of the election of a replacement for Herman Mashaba last week to seek a legal opinion on what constituted a majority of votes in council.

Both MEC for Human Settlements, Urban Planning and CoGTA, Lebogang Maile and Gauteng Premier, David Makhura have said that they would intervene if a mayor is not elected, as planned.

“In the first round the candidate with the least votes will fall out and in the second round, we then have two candidates and the one who has 50 plus one percent of those who cast their ballots will be the mayor of Johannesburg.

Moodey says he anticipates that the EFF’s candidate will the first to fall away in this process, leaving them in the deciding position to swing the vote in the second round of the ballot.

“The kingmakers toady will be the EFF,” says Moodey.
