Janusz Walus deserves to rot in jail - SACP

The South African Communist Party (SACP) says it believes convicted killer Janusz Walus does not deserve to be granted parole.

The man convicted of the murder of former general-secretary Chris Hani has again been denied parole by Minister of Justice, Michael Masutha.

Masutha made the announcement in Pretoria on Wednesday.

Walus was sentenced to death in 1993 following his conviction but the sentence was later commuted to life after the death penalty was outlawed.

In November 2017, Walus was denied parole and Masutha directed that certain conditions be met - a decision which was later challenged by Walus in the High Court in Pretoria.

The court ruled that the decision be set aside on procedural grounds.

SACP spokesperson Alex Mashilo says Walus has shown no remorse for Hani's murder.

"The convicted murderer asserts that he has no remorse for murdering Chris Hani the communist but claims to be having remorse for murdering Chris Hani the husband and father. As if Chris Hani the communist was not the same Chris Hani the husband and father whom he murdered."

Mashilo says the party does not believe that Walus can be rehabilitated.

"Murder remains unjustifiable, whether it is the murder of a communist or a husband and father.

"What he deserves is to rot in jail for so long as he tries to justify the murder of Chris Hani, and for so long as all the circumstances surrounding the murder have not been fully disclosed or uncovered."

Mashilo says the party will continue to fight for justice for Hani.
