The 25 year-old Sarel du Toit earlier this week pleaded guilty to Jasmin's rape and murder in late December 2013.

He admitted to taking her from her room while she slept and then killing her before hiding her under his bed in Brakpan on the East Rand.

Judge Mohamed Ismail explained that in his opinion there were no mitigating circumstances which would warrant a lesser sentence.

Ismail told du Toit that he betrayed his niece's trust and killed a child who posed no threat to him whatsoever.

He described the graphic nature of this attack, adding that even the most seasoned soldier would struggle with this case.

"In my view this was a terrible rape and it falls within the worst category of rape I've had the displeasure to preside over," Ismail said.

Ismail added that the State argued that no other sentence but life would be fitting, seeing as du Toit's actions were so evil.

He agreed, saying the only just and appropriate sentence would be life for each of the crimes. The sentences will run concurrently.

Jasmin's mother, Sasha Bam, welcomed the sentenced and said she was relieved.

"It is a point to show to others, who are in similar situations to what Jasmin went through, that there is justice," Bam said. - Maryke Vermaak
