Johannesburg Central Police arrested a 28-year-old man for alleged armed robbery on Saturday, Gauteng police said.
The suspect was arrested at the Cape York building on the corner of Jeppe and Nugget streets at 6am, following an armed robbery on the corner of Bree and Goud streets about 15 minutes earlier, Warrant Officer Xoli Mbele said on Sunday.
The victim, a 24-year-old man, was on his way to his flat when he was confronted by three assailants. One of them pointed a firearm at him while the others searched him, taking his cellphone and wallet before fleeing the scene. The victim followed them until he saw a police vehicle and alerted the officers.
Two suspects were still at large but the victim’s cellphone was recovered from the arrested suspect. An investigation was underway and the suspect would appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court soon, Mbele said.
