The Johannesburg Metro Police Department says more than 520 motorists have been arrested for driving under the inlfuence in Johannesburg over the Christmas weekend.

Six nurses were sent to the alcohol evidence centres to take blood samples of the drivers who were arrested.

A number of motorists have been released on bail while others still need to appear in court throughout the remainder of the week.

JMPD spokesperson Wayne Minnaar says their major concerns - especially for the upcoming New Year's weekend - are speeding and reckless driving.

"Drunken driving contributes towards fatal accidents," says Minnaar. "We want to encourage motorists to stop drinking and driving and not to drive recklessly."

Minnaar adds they will increase police numbers on the ground ahead of the New Year's celebrations and will also collaborate with other law enforcement agencies.
