Joburg ANC ‘corrects’ statement on Eskom power agreement
Updated | By Eva Chipa
Johannesburg Mayor Mpho Moerane on Friday
signed an additional 100 MW of electricity in a power purchase agreement with
the Kelvin Power station.
In statement released on the same day, the greater Johannesburg African National Congress (ANC) regional body lauded the power purchase agreement between City Power and Eskom, which is a separate agreement to the one signed by the mayor.
“The ANC in the great Johannesburg region did not withdraw its original statement, however it has been corrected,” says spokesperson Sasabona Manganye.
The agreement between City Power and Eskom, looks at the City of Johannesburg taking over power supply in parts of Soweto. However, only a memorandum of understanding has been signed and not an actual agreement.
Manganye says the statement looked at two key issues which they simply corrected the statement, not withdrew.
“There are two issues we are dealing with, firstly we are dealing with the power purchase agreement that has been signed between the city and Kelvin power station.
“Secondly, we are dealing with the issue of memorandum of understanding between the City and Eskom. This understanding is to allow the due diligence to take place which is intended for the city to take over Eskom supplied areas. So that’ the correction that we have made, it does not mean there are no talks of an agreement between the city and Eskom,” says Manganye.
